Ever wondered what materials are best used for HDB gates in Singapore, or why we choose the materials that we do? These are some of the common materials as well as the pros and cons that come with their usage.
Mild Steel Gates
The undisputed top choice for HDB gates in Singapore, mild steel gates encapsulate all the qualities that make a great gate. Durable and resistant to rust, these are crucial for surviving the country’s unwavering humidity. However, mild steels greatest asset is arguably it’s malleability. Mild steel can take on many forms, which makes the design choices available nothing short of unparalleled.
Wrought Iron Gates
A common site amongst older HDB units, these gates were chosen for their great durability. They also allow for the use of a wide range of colours. However, in spite of their many great qualities, wrought iron is usually twisted and bent in terms of their design language due to their manufacturing process. This limits their design potential and often allows only very traditional gate designs.
Aluminium Gates
This material solves the rust problem; however, aluminium gates do not fare nearly as well as other materials in terms of durability and are much more limited in terms of design choices. In most cases, the negatives outweigh the positives, and aluminium gates are hence not a very common sight.
Stainless Steel Gates
Naturally sturdy and able to combat the rust issue that is ever so prevalent in Singapore, stainless steel gates have proven to be a great choice for gates. These qualities make them reliable options that are more than able to withstand the test of time. However, unlike their cousin mild steel, they are more limited in terms of design options.
